A decadent and unique wedding venue located near Wetherby, in the heart of Yorkshire, the Bowcliffe Estate offers an unrivalled breadth of options set in twenty eight acres of spectacular grounds, that allow you to create a day that truly reflects your personal taste and style. With a strictly limited number of weddings each year, we don’t believe in wedding packages, but in working closely with you to create a truly exclusive day, in spectacular surroundings, that you and your guests will never forget.
A venue steeped in history
Built between 1805 and 1825 Bowcliffe Hall has been home to industrialists, aristocracy and aviation pioneers. The house was completed in 1825 by John Smyth who lived here until his death in 1841. Bowcliffe was then bought by the Lane–Fox’s of Bramham, who lived here from 1841– 1906, whilst Bramham was reconstructed after a fire.
In 1917 Robert Blackburn, an aviation pioneer, purchased Bowcliffe as his family home. Blackburn had been designing, building and flying planes since 1909 and introducing the first scheduled air service to Great Britain. In 1914 Robert’s wedding reception was interrupted by a call from Winston Churchill, the then Lord of the Admiralty, and a frequent visitor to Bowcliffe Hall, (hence the portrait of him in the entrance hall) instructing him to postpone his honeymoon to discuss the deployment of his planes in the war effort.
Blackburn Aviation went on to become the largest supplier of aircraft to the Royal Naval Air Service. Blackburn has been somewhat overlooked by history, but the decision to build a new events space, The Blackburn Wing, gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate his achievements and give him the recognition he deserves. The Blackburn family moved from the Hall in 1950.
