EVENT: Leeds Civic Trust Open Day – The Blackburn Wing – 30th September 2023

Held in the Blackburn Wing – our 2,000 sq. ft. treehouse, shaped like an aeroplane’s wing – this talk will discuss the life and times of aviation pioneer, Robert Blackburn (1885 – 1955), the founder and chairman of Blackburn Aircraft and former resident of Bowcliffe Hall.

Blackburn designed and flew his first aeroplane in 1910, becoming a major figure in the aviation industry. He produced more than seventy different aircraft designs, including the iconic Mercury, Bluebird, Skua, Beverley and Buccaneer.

The talk is being held by Robert Blackburn’s grandson, who will unveil a portrait of his grandfather, which he is donating to be displayed at Bowcliffe Hall.

He will give a family perspective on the personality and achievements of his grandfather, and the landmarks and influences in his life and work, all in the beautiful copper and glass surroundings of Bowcliffe Hall’s Blackburn Wing, built in tribute to Robert Blackburn himself.

Timings: 2pm-4pm
